Our Favorite Things to Do in Saugatuck on a Rainy Day
Rain does not ruin a Saugatuck weekend. Honestly, some of our favorite guest stories come from the rainy days. People check in worried about the forecast and check out, telling us it ended up being perfect. Saugatuck was built around art and culture, which means much of what makes this place special happens indoors anyway. Here are things to do in Saugatuck when the weather does not want to cooperate.
Saugatuck Art Galleries
Saugatuck calls itself Michigan's Art Coast, and a rainy day is the perfect chance to see why. Butler Street has a handful of galleries you can walk between without getting soaked. Amazwi Contemporary Art focuses on African art and diaspora work, and the pieces always start conversations. Good Goods is part gallery, part shop, with art mixed in alongside well-designed home goods and books you will actually want to read.
For rotating exhibitions and live performances from local artists, Saugatuck Center for the Arts is worth the visit. Just be sure to check their schedule before you head over. Across the bridge into Douglas, Ox-Bow House at 137 Center Street is open most days with rotating shows and artist receptions on the second Saturday of every month. The building itself has history, as it’s connected to the Ox-Bow School of Art, which has been part of the area for over a century.
All of these are close enough to Hotel Saugatuck that you can walk between them, duck back to your room if you need a break, and head out again when you feel like it. Rain actually makes gallery hopping better because the streets are quieter and you can take your time without feeling like you should be outside doing something else.
Antique Shopping and Gourmet Stores
If you like poking around antique stores, the Saugatuck Antique Pavilion is a good rainy-day stop. It has multiple dealers under one roof, so you can spend an hour looking at mid-century furniture, vintage glassware, old signs, and the kind of architectural salvage that makes you want to redesign your house. We have had guests find pieces they ended up shipping home, and others who just enjoy the browsing.
If you love to cook or want to discover the tastier side of town, make sure to check out the gourmet shops in Saugatuck. You’ll find local olive oils, artisan chocolates, specialty pantry items, and kitchen tools that make great gifts and souvenirs. The people working there know what they are selling and can tell you the difference between products, which helps when you are deciding what to bring home.
History Museums
Saugatuck started as a lumber and shipping town before it became an art colony and resort destination. If you want to understand how that happened, the local history museums have you covered. The Saugatuck Douglas History Center in the old Union School has exhibits on maritime history, the lumber boom, and how tourism changed everything. The Pump House History Museum near Mount Baldhead focuses more on the working side of things, the chain ferry, the dredging projects, and the infrastructure that kept the port running.
Both are small enough that you can visit in an hour or so, but they are some of the best things to do in Saugatuck when the weather turns, and they will answer questions you probably have after walking around town for a day or two.
Get Creative
If you want to make something while you are here, there are a few options. Puddingstone runs Cocktail & Kokedama classes where you learn to create Japanese moss ball gardens and leave with a finished piece. Their schedule varies, so check their website for dates. Express Yourself Art Barn opens in early May each year, offering pottery painting, mosaic creation, and glass fusing workshops suitable for all skill levels. The instructors are patient, and the space feels relaxed, which helps if you have not picked up a paintbrush since high school.
Lulu Cadieux hosts cooking classes that teach you techniques you will actually use at home. The classes are hands-on, and you get to eat what you make, which is an experience all in itself. Saugatuck Brewing Company offers brew-on-premises sessions where you make your own beer and come back weeks later to bottle it. It is more involved than a tasting, and you leave with something you made yourself.
Explore Local Craft Beverages
If you do not want to make your own beer, tastings are another one of our favorite things to do in Saugatuck on a wet afternoon. Opt for a tasting flight at Saugatuck Brewing Company or head to a local winery for wine tastings. Fenn Valley Vineyards is about 15 minutes away and offers wine tastings in a tasting room that overlooks their vineyards. They make a range of wines from their estate fruit, and the staff knows the vineyard well enough to explain what you are tasting and what to pair it with.
Crane's Pie Pantry and Winery does something different. You can order a pie and cider flight, which pairs slices of their fruit pies with hard ciders made on-site. The orchard is family-run, and they have been making pies here for decades.
Classic Rainy Day Activities
When you just want to do something easy and familiar, Alley's Pizza and Bowling is perfect for that, with old-school bowling lanes alongside delicious pizza and craft beers. If you want to see a movie, Sperry's Moviehouse in Holland is about 20 minutes away, and shows a mix of current releases and independent films daily.
Saugatuck Restaurants Perfect for a Rainy Day
On a rainy day, a long brunch or an early dinner becomes the main event instead of something you squeeze in between activities. Most Saugatuck restaurants are walkable from Hotel Saugatuck, which means you can make a reservation, head out without worrying about parking, and just enjoy the meal (just make sure to bring an umbrella).
The scale of this town keeps restaurants intimate. You are not competing for attention or shouting over a packed dining room. Pick what sounds good and settle in.
Spend the Day in Your Room (The Best Rainy Day Plan)
Sometimes the best plan is no plan at all. On rainy days, many guests choose to stay right where they are, and that’s exactly how Hotel Saugatuck was designed to be enjoyed.
Each of our rooms feature a fireplace you can control yourself, making it easy to settle in for a slow, cozy day. Our Jason Hydrotherapy tubs are designed for long, comfortable soaks, so it’s easy to spend an hour or two with a book and nowhere else to be.
If you'd rather not venture out, you don't have to. Breakfast can be delivered right to your room, and an evening dessert is always an option. Order lunch from a local favorite, settle in by the fire, and let the day unfold at its own pace.
There's something about a rainy day that gives you permission to slow down. No itinerary, no pressure to see and do everything, just a quiet day in your room while the rain taps against the windows. For many guests, that simple moment of stillness ends up being the highlight of the trip.
